How do you start your workday? Do you hop onto Facebook or Twitter for a few minutes to see what’s up?

There’s nothing wrong with that — unless a few minute turns into half an hour, then an hour, and before you know it, half the morning’s gone and you haven’t accomplished anything.

Join the crowd. If if feels like you and everyone else are on social networks more than ever, it’s probably because you are.

Over the last several years, the time people spend tweeting, sending Facebook status updates or tinkering with their LinkedIn profiles has tripled. Social networking now accounts for 19 percent of time spent online, or about one out of every five minutes, according to a comScore report released in December 2011.

Some people have no problem swearing off social networks during the workday. Others have no choice because their companies block the sites — though that’s changing as more businesses integrate social media into sales, recruiting, customer service and other operations.

If you have unlimited access to social networks and find yourself unable to log off on your own, there’s help in the form of software that can make your social media use more efficient.

These social media time sink slayers take several forms, including applications that let you:

1. Collect updates in one place.

Social media managers let you see and send updates on multiple online networks from one interface. One of the most popular is HootSuite, which integrates updates from Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Foursquare and a few lesser-known networks. Another popular alternative is TweetDeck, which lets you check on Twitter and Facebook. Some programs allow you to manage multiple Twitter or Facebook accounts, a plus if you maintain separate accounts on those networks for work and personal use.

Many of these programs are free (some also offer paid versions with more features) and come as web-based or mobile applications or software you download and save on a computer. The downside of these tools is learning yet another user interface. If you’re just getting the hang of Facebook or Twitter, programs such as HootSuite and TweetDeck might not be simple to navigate. This blog post from online marketing agency Simply Zesty describes other social media management tools such as Seesmic and Ping.fm.

2. Put sites in time out.

If you’re really lacking in willpower, install a program that blocks access to the internet or to pre-selected sites for you. Some of these programs are extensions or add-ons that work with specific web browsers. Chrome users, for example, can download and install the StayFocusd extension to restrict access to specific paths, subdomains or pages on a site, or content that lives inside a page such as videos or games (good for knocking out that Angry Birds addiction). When the time you’ve allotted yourself to spend at any of those locations is up, they’re gone for the rest of the day. The app also can be configured to block certain hours of the day or days of the week — so you can work Monday through Friday and goof around on weekends. Read more on StayFocusd in this post from Lifehacker.

Fans of the Firefox web browser can use a similar program called Leechblock; Lifehacker also has a good tutorial on setting up and using the program.

Other site blockers work in conjunction with a computer’s operating system. Mac users, for example, can use a $15 program called Antisocial to lock themselves out of popular social networks and other sites for a specified number of hours. If you want to go cold turkey, use Freedom, a $10 app that works with Mac or Windows computers and kicks you off the internet for up to eight hours at a time.

3. Track your time.

What better motivation to be more efficient than knowing exactly how you’re spending every minute of your workday. Productivity trackers monitor how much time you’re spending on specific tasks, and in some cases, nudge you if you aren’t doing what you’re supposed to. SlimTimer, for example, is an online time sheet that lets you click on a task to start a clock, click again when you’re finished, and run reports to analyze how you’re using your time. A program called RescueTime, which you download and install on your computer, runs in the background to track the applications or websites you’re using.

Read more about those and other web-based time trackers in this post on Work Awesome, a blog devoted to helping people be more productive on the job.

Question: Can I sell shares of stock in my new company online? Non-profit organizations and politicians raise money through their web sites, so why can’t I. My plan is to raise $100,000 by asking people to donate just $50 through PayPal. What do you think?

Answer: Savvy entrepreneurs are always looking for faster, easier ways to build their companies, including how they raise equity capital from investors. It’s no wonder that entrepreneurs today want to leverage their online networks to solicit funds from their online “friends,“followers,” and “fans.”

Is this a good idea? While I give you a thumbs up for creativity; state and federal regulators would give your fundraising plan a big thumbs down on execution. Here’s why.

Unfortunately, there is a long history of shady opportunists selling worthless stock to the public. It’s not just billion dollar frauds like Bernie Madoff that concern regulators and duped investors, it’s all the well-disguised mini-Madoffs who have no intention of operating a legitimate business or repaying investors in an honest way.

To comply with regulations to minimize securities fraud, entrepreneurs have to register the securities they intend to sell to large numbers of individual investors with the U.S. Securities Exchange Commission. As part of this process, entrepreneurs must prepare an extensive description of their business and the securities offered for sale. This legal document, called an “offering memorandum” plus other requirements can easily cost $10,000 to $25,000 in legal fees.

Is this a good use of an entrepreneur’s precious capital? Not always. Unfortunately, not all corporate lawyers inform first-time entrepreneurs of the ways they can sidestep hefty legal bills and still comply with state and federal securities regulations.

In general terms, one of the most common work-arounds for entrepreneurs who want to raise less than $5 million and qualify for an exemption to registration requirements is to solicit “accredited investors.”

An accredited investor is a wealthy individual who can supposedly “afford” to lose part or all of their investment without causing serious family hardship. The SEC defines accredited investors as individuals who have a net worth of $1 million. The annual income requirement for accredited individuals is $200,000 or $300,000 for joint family income.

Recently Congress and the SEC tightened up the definition of an accredited investor. Now, individuals cannot include the value of their primary residence in the net worth calculation. The value of any first or second mortgages on a primary residence are also excluded from the net worth calculation provided that the value of the home is not less than any indebtedness that is secured by the individual’s primary residence.

There are other types of investors that qualify as “accredited investors.” Venture capital funds, banks, insurance companies, small business investment companies (SBIC), and certain charities, corporations, partnerships or trusts with assets greater than $5 million can qualify as accredited investors. A director or executive officer of the entrepreneurial company selling securities can qualify too.

I do appreciate that asking wealthy strangers to invest in your business can seem intimidating, but it can also be empowering. Raising money for a growing business is an important achievement that gives entrepreneurs extra confidence to tackle tough business challenges.

Check out the SEC Website for more rules associated with small business equity fundraising.

Editor’s note: Brenna Ehrlich and Andrea Bartz are the sarcastic brains behind humor blog and book “Stuff Hipsters Hate.” Got a question about etiquette in the digital world? Contact them atnetiquette@cnn.com.

(CNN) – Perhaps it’s the inherently soul-crushing nature of the holiday season, but it seems many of our readers have been beset by quandaries of late. So, being the utterly benevolent souls that we are, we’re choosing to devote this week’s column to more reader questions.

This week we tackle Facebook friend collectors and the eternal query: To tweet or not to tweet?

Merry, Happy Whatever, everyone.

Most times when I get a friend request or if someone accepts mine, I initiate a “thanks for the friend (request/accept)” in a private message, plus a quick update — one or two lines max. Most of the time I receive something similar in return. With some friends this leads to more conversation, sometimes not, but either way at least we communicated.

Every once in a while, I”ll initiate a message and the new “friend” doesn’t bother to respond. I guess I’m not sure what to make of it. I see their activity on FB so I know they have signed in but they never responded back. If we’re supposed to be “friends” a quick “hello” and maybe an update would seem good manners. I have had different friends suggest different meanings:

1. If they have not responded after several weeks and you see them active, just “unfriend” them because they were just “collecting” you anyway.

2 Don’t private message them, post on their wall. Many people don’t like the PM stuff — too creepy. (I’ve posted on their wall as well with about the same rate of return communication).

3. Who cares? You don’t want to talk to those people anyway (I guess that returns me to option 1 but that approach seems rather harsh).

What do you think is the correct approach?

- Fed-Up With Fake Friends

Assuming that you are not, in fact, clicking obsessively through your new friend’s Timeline, fastidiously poring over years 2005-2011 and shooting off private messages that amorously detail the imagined flick of her tongue as she enjoyed a melting cone of pistachio sherbet on June 3, 2006, it sounds like you’ve been suffering some serious abuse at the hands of “The Friend Collector.” (That’s a term both similar and many ways vastly different from the 1999 flick starring Denzel Washington, which your new friend added to her favorite films in early 2007).

The friend collector is a wily, often drunk beast that lurks within all of us, threatening to rise up and assume our form during a particularly vigorous bout of Facebooking/memory lane-walking/power-houring.

The phenomenon was admittedly less common back in the days when we actually had to type a remembered acquaintance’s name into the search bar, squinting through the dust of childhood and a veil of tequila to remember his/her surname.

But a while back Facebook added that pesky “People You May Know” feature, impelling us to add childhood friends, half-remembered college classmates and random guys in indie bands (or what I like to call “future ex-boyfriends”) with wild abandon.

Many times, we add such people not because we particularly want to talk to them, but merely because we’re afflicted with the oh-so itch-able question, “I wonder what so-and-so is doing now,” and we just have to scratch.

And you know what happens when you scratch too hard: You draw blood. And in this case, that blood is yours, in that you’re getting hurt when your fake pal shuns your friendly — non-creepy, non-murderous, right? — advances.

So let’s all take a vow, as we wander myopically into the New Year: Thou shalt not friend collect. Even if our good friend Martin Martini makes a strong case for it at 3 a.m.

Oh, and to answer your question: Go ahead and unfriend the phony. She’ll probably just attempt to friend you again, wholly unaware that she has already done so. Like a true criminal, a Friend Collector always returns to the scene of the crime.

I am a writer and I love sarcasm. My work is posted on patch.com (Upper Dublin, Pennsylvania) but I would like to get it noticed — I don’t think anyone reads it. How could I get my work noticed? A writer friend told me to Twitter whenever I’m published. Who the heck is going to go on my Twitter account? I’m a 58-year-old mom in the suburbs — please. Plus I don’t have a Twitter account.

- To Tweet or Not to Tweet?

OK, so just because you’re a 58-year-old mom in the suburbs, that means no one cares what the hell you have to say? I would use a word synonymous with (and less idiotic than) “baloney” here if this weren’t CNN, but, yeah, there you have it.

Ever heard of Sam Halpern? Well, he’s a 70-something-year-old man who has nearly 3 million people in his thrall daily via the Twitter account @sh*tmydadsays. Granted, the Twitter account is not run by Sam himself but by his son Justin, but regardless, Sam’s pearls of weirdness and wisdom have spawned a book and a TV series.

But here’s where you differ from Sam: You’re the writer here. You’re the one creating content that you think others should see (unless you have some kind of weird obsession with corgis in Cosby sweaters, in which case your kids are about to cash it in big time) and you need to be the one to get it out there.

So listen to your writer friend: Start a Twitter account, but do so in a tactical way. Don’t just sign up and start tweeting links to your articles into the ether. Search for other writers whom you admire — and work with on Patch.com — and follow them posthaste.

Read what they have to say, engage in conversations and post links to articles and stories that both you and your followers can appreciate. Then, once you’ve built up a relationship with this online network of people — who will see you as much more than a suburban mom (not that there’s anything wrong with that) — add your own work into the mix.

Since people will already trust you and your judgment, they will be much more willing to retweet your stories and thereby score you a much wider audience than you would have had out there, rockin’ the suburbs.

And, who knows, if your work is good, maybe you, too, can score a book/TV deal. If not, well, then go ahead and use my corgis in Cosby sweaters idea. That one is solid gold.

You can create a video message fairly easily if you use programs and systems like iMovie and YouTube. You also have to keep it fairly short. I’m just going to talk about it for fun this time around – you can expect a screen cast later on in the future.

Transcript

Hey there, it’s me Sunny again. So you’re probably wondering how do you send a video message in five minutes or less? Well, it’s pretty easy to do already, you can use Facebook video, if it’s actually working. Sometimes when you set up the Facebook messages, for example, you can do the same.

If however, you are really, really wanting to do email and you are trying to go on this crazy video emails only like I’m trying to do right now (hard), then I decided to figure out how to make YouTube work for me.

And all I had to do was this: I went over to YouTube, I… well, before I went over to YouTube actually, I whipped open iMovie, my favourite Mac program for doing video messages and video blogging. And then I created a quick movie, about less than four, five, three minutes.

In fact I just created a two minute video right now to send to a former intern employee of mine and it took me about two minutes right there, two minutes and seven seconds actually.

Then I decided I would export it, it took about a few minutes there, and let’s just say we don’t count that part, so I’m cheating. And it’s already exporting, and then you decide, I’ll send out that message, but later.

So once you decide to do that, when finally later comes, you upload that video to YouTube and… yeah, that’s about four minutes, I should say. And then you upload that video to YouTube and of course, you’re still not counting the actual sending the video message, so just all the prep work, let’s just say you need 15 minutes so really I’m cheating.

And you upload that to YouTube, you can use your account which is personal, yada, yada, all that sort of stuff. And you send the message, all you have to do is go down, find the share button, press the share button, press the share button and find the email option.

(Photo of the YouTube Sharing Bars)

Click email and it should pop up this little box that will have a place for email, the message, some contacts you might have, of course you’re using a alternate YouTube account anyway that’s hidden, you probably won’t have any contacts.

So I use my good old friend Quicksilver (thank goodness Blacktree came back from Google exile). And using Quicksilver, I quickly bring up the contact, which is my intern, go to the contact, select your email, say copy to clipboard, paste into the email address section and then write in a quick message and then send it. And booyah! I sent that video message in less than five minutes, not counting of course all the prep time and uploads.

(Photo of the built in emailing system in the YouTube interface)

So in theory you could say I sent that video message in less than 15 minutes, which is pretty fast compared to the other messages I’ve done which included all of the music and what not, it’s fast and simple stuff.

So should this have been actually named as how to send a video email message in less than five minutes, well it could have been five minutes, it depends on whether you counted the video preparation time or not. Because as you’ve seen, you could have turned a business report into a pdf and then you decide to email later or it could be how to send a video message in less than 20 minutes or 15 or 21 minutes, that depends on you. Okay?

So if you decide that you’re going to promise yourself to send only video messages for the next week, try making use of YouTube, the share button, the email button and QuickSilver if you have a Mac or some other Windows application launcher to bring up the contact, quickly select the email address, paste into the– email address into the email entry box, press a new message and it sends, voila. You don’t have to open an email program like Apple Mail, you don’t have to open Google mail, or Gmail, and you don’t have to open Outlook.

So that’s how to send your video message in five minutes or less in a nutshell, or more aptly named it could be, how to send a video message in less than 21 minutes.

PS. Got any suggestions to make this process faster? Let everyone know about your clever idea!

In a Nutshell

There are 5-7 key skills or traits that trust agents have. Do you know which ones they are and which ones you have? Join the shinobi on his final review of Trust Agents: Using the Web to Build Influence, Improve Reputation, and Earn Trust (affiliate link) by Chris Brogan and Julien Smith (the human artist and the hacker).

Transcript

Hey everyone, it’s me Sunny, the Shinobi Career Coach and today finally, if I haven’t already done the first part of the review for Trust Agents (affiliate link) by Chris Brogan and Julien Smith. It’ll be the last time I ever do it… no just kidding. I actually thoroughly enjoyed the book, I re-read it in a crazy speed reading test using some recent information I learned from the 4 Hour Work Week.

So Trust Agents is by Chris Brogan and Julien Smith. It is an amusing book to be sure, it’s almost like the holy hand bible of all social media tools and gurus and what not. I mean, the only other thing that would come close would be Brian Solis’ Engage (affiliate link), which is much for larger companies more than anything else, surprisingly. And this is a wonderful book, it’s got a lot of useful information with the basic concept and definition of what it means to be a trust agent.

And what does that really mean, to be a trust agent?

You need to be someone who really tries their best to put relationships first and forget about hoping that there’s going to be something down the road, it’s more about putting people first, putting the human back into things as Chris Brogan himself would probably say, especially since he runs a business called “Human Business Works“.

So definitely a must-read for anyone who is going into marketing or advertising, public relations, in fact I’d probably recommend this as a must-read for pretty much any person of this generation for that matter, which some might call, isn’t that crazy talk, what are you doing Sunny?

I would probably say, of course not, totally not, totally absolutely not. Because this book is about, as the very subtitle will say, build influence, improve reputation and build trust. And certainly with all the things that have happened with regard to Wall Street, the economic crisis and what not, trust is still shaken with regard to a lot of other societal and economic issues, environmental degradation, whether or not anyone believes in climate change, there’s still tons of other problems within society that still have to be dealt with, including poverty and hunger, the out of control spending that we all have to grapple with including things like the deficit.

1 and 2. Agent Zero and “One of Us”

So that aside, some of the key things I got out of this book primarily was really about agent zero, the concept of being an agent zero, building networks and bringing groups of people together, no matter how small they are.

Whether it’s a community group, a linchpin (like I’m part of up and coming Linchpin Toronto kind of thing, which was spurred from Seth Godin’s book (affiliate link), surprisingly, the next meeting is on January 25, for example.

So building networks and being at the centre of a network, which isn’t really all that surprising because others talk about a lot of networking in books by people like Ivan Meisner, who’s made part of his network in called BNI (Business Networking International), which I’m not a part of. Though I’ve thought of joining.

2. Leverage (Archimede’s Effect)

And the second thing I got out of Chris’ book is the idea of leverage, something I’m actually quite bad at doing is leveraging previous successes and projects to spur you ahead in new ones. So I used to work as an ex-farmer, so I do know how to grow foods, though some might think I’m completely not a farmer type person, I’ve actually worn a straw hat before.

Like I did communications for a non-profit farm and I had no way of actually leveraging that to help me with my new mission, particularly with my new work, reinvigorate my business of helping people find the career or path that they’re looking for.

And of course this year’s goal as you know, I’m aiming to help 999 people find the true job or path that they’re supposed to be walking on. Which is also why I wrote my book as well as the free version of the book, which is on the front page of the website. Ha ha ha, yes, shameless self promotion, I’m just kidding.

It’s [all material] for you guys to explore if you want to including a free 5 Steps to a Surefire Resume course for resume writing. So leverage is a cool concept that Chris and Julien bring up again in here, which I just talked about.

3 and 4. Hacking and Making Your Own Game

The other thing that I found to be so telling and so important to realize whether you’re a job searcher, PR agent or anything like that is the concept of hacking.

And I do talk about that in the micro lessons in my book as well, is the concept of hacking. And by understanding the system, you have a better chance and capability of being able to hack it. Now hacking can be– has this connotation of being a bad thing, really hacking is just another tool like a wrench.

Whether you use it for good, as in hacking that could help people find the shortcuts that make things easier and get more things done, kind of related to leverage, then hacking is a good thing.

However, when you hack as a bad thing, like hacking into bank accounts, stealing money and stealing people’s hard earned savings, then that’s a bad sort of hacking.

Or cheating and plagiarizing, just so you can get through an engineering exam, which I have heard of and seen before, as well as making people who do do hard work, pretty much feel like, they’re wasting time, while others step ahead.

I suppose that could be a clever hacking, however it could also be considered a bad hack because that also leads to things like the economic crisis where Wall Street bankers hack away at the system and everyone else pays for it.

So that’s another third concept which I found to be fascinating in trust agents and I think everyone, including job searchers should understand that if you want to make a job search work, you have to find ways to speed it up, make it efficient and hack it, which I talk about in the micro lessons in my book.

So that was the third… probably the third most important key thing that I really got out of the book, though I would have to say there was probably one more concept.

5. Army Builder and Leader

So you could say that this book talks about a lot of key skills and core competencies of being a trust agent is the ability to build on these. And that does take a lot of leadership skills and putting yourself out there.

Like I said, a leader is someone who’s going to have to have vision, it’s kind of like the massive version… or like a supersized version of an agent zero skill set, where agent zero focussed on small groups and can cross networks while an army builder is a guy who can really gather all of these different groups together to work a common cause, and that takes a lot of vision, a lot of drive and something that you can really rally people behind.

And I think when I was reading a section about army building, it really brought home to me the ideas from Switch: How to Make Change When Change Is Hard (affiliate link). And they talk about value of finding one simple and easy to do thing, actually a concept, like a small step, and then when you successfully put every last bit of effort and what not into making that small step happen, then they move onto the next one.

It is actually quite slow in terms of change and it does require a huge input of energy. So understand where that goes back to the other parts in this book about hacking, how do you hack, the whole process so that all the other things are easier. You don’t always get all the answers and that’s to be expected because every situation is different.

In Short

So to be sure, should you read Trust Agents (affiliate link)? Just for those three, four, five core competencies and things that are in this book. If anything, you should go to a bookstore and just read the last chapter and you pretty much get a good summary, because as Chris or any other writer will say, the conclusion is really the introduction or vice versa, however you want.

And more so than that is the ability to actually practice what you preach, practice what you aim for and make it happen. Cross the execution gap – that’s what I’m trying to do this year by aiming to help 999 people find the job or path that they follow and finding a way to hack it so that I can make it easy enough for everyone involved including myself.

So that’s my very, very finalized review of Chris Brogan and Julien Smith’s Trust Agents (affiliate link), an excellent book to go through. At the very least, I would say the foundation of any sort of business, okay? So if you have a chance, find it.

I think Chris was clever with this book since it’s in hard copy form only. And I am very much an electronic tool style e-reader guy unfortunately. So pick up a hard copy if you can and/or read the conclusion at a bookstore if you must. I think this is definitely a must-read for any person who wishes to be a communicator and also a relationship builder.

In the latest episode of public bickering between Twitter and Google over the search engine’s new Google+ integration, Twitter general counsel Alex Macgillivray has turned to wrestling.

That’s the example he tweeted Wednesday afternoon to demonstrate the inefficiency of Google’s latest changes, at least. “Folks asked for examples,” he wrote. “Here’s what a user searching for ‘@WWE’ will be shone on the new @Google.”

Included in the tweet is an image of Google search results that include the World Wrestling Entertainment’s website, Google+ page and other relevant Google+ profiles — but no Twitter page.

Twitter criticized Google’s new search feature, which it calls Search plus Your World, in a statement Tuesday. “As we’ve seen time and time again, news breaks first on Twitter,” its statement said. “We’re concerned that as a result of Google’s changes, finding this information will be much harder for everyone.”

Google later implied that Twitter was the one that had stopped the search engine from including Tweets in real-time results. An agreement between the two companies, which gave the search engine access to public tweets, ended in July and was not renewed.

Macgillivray’s example shows that, at least in some cases, people who are searching for a Twitter handle will no longer necessarily find its page at the top of Google’s results. This is also true for handles such as@nytimes and @mashable, though it is not true in all cases. A search for @mittromney, for instance, still returns Twitter results before Google+ results.

We see Macgillivray’s point. Shouldn’t people find what they are searching for at the top of their results? On the other hand, Google isn’t providing a public service. It’s a business. Should it be obligated to put Twitter’s pages above its own when people are clearly searching for them? Let us know where you stand in the comments.

After Google announced Tuesday morning that it would more closely integrate Google+ into its regular search results, vocal opposition to the changes arrived Tuesday afternoon from an unlikely source: Twitter.

A statement from the microblogging company said Twitter’s real-time information was often the most relevant result on Google. “As we’ve seen time and time again, news breaks first on Twitter,” the company said. “We’re concerned that as a result of Google’s changes, finding this information will be much harder for everyone.”

The Google update, known as “Search Plus Your World,” blends Google+ pages that have been made public in with regular search results on Google — although the Google+ results are clearly annotated. It’s a fairly major update for Google+ users — of which there are now reportedly 62 million — and a fairly minor update for the rest of us.

Still, it evidently got the warning klaxons blaring over at Twitter HQ. Here’s the complete statement, care of Twitter spokesman Matt Graves:

For years, people have relied on Google to deliver the most relevant results anytime they wanted to find something on the Internet.

Often, they want to know more about world events and breaking news. Twitter has emerged as a vital source of this real-time information, with more than 100 million users sending 250 million Tweets every day on virtually every topic. As we’ve seen time and time again, news breaks first on Twitter; as a result, Twitter accounts and Tweets are often the most relevant results.

We’re concerned that as a result of Google’s changes, finding this information will be much harder for everyone. We think that’s bad for people, publishers, news organizations and Twitter users.

We’ve also reached out to Facebook for its take on Google’s search tweaks. But what do you think? Is Twitter being oversensitive, or did Google misuse its monopoly power? Have you spotted any difference in your search results? Let us know in the comments.

What is one tip that you have for effectively delegating the job of social media marketing at your company? – Scott H. of Detroit, MI

The following answers are provided by the Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC). Founded by Scott Gerber, the YEC is an invite-only nonprofit organization comprised of the country’s most promising young entrepreneurs. The YEC promotes entrepreneurship as a solution to youth unemployment and underemployment and provides its members with access to tools, mentorship, and resources that support each stage of a business’s development and growth. E-mail your questions about best practices for starting up and/or managing a small business to smbs@foxbusiness.com.

No. 1: Never Delegate Social Media Externally

From Laura Roeder of LKR

Remember that social media is not just marketing but customer service — people are interacting with, and asking questions about, your company and the person answering them must be knowledgeable. And it’s especially important because a bad social media interaction can be spread virally in seconds. Choose someone who is able to answer any question and can speak in the voice of your brand.

No. 2: Use a Team Platform to Manage

From Logan Lenz of Endagon

Depending on the size of your company, there’s often the need for more than one person to manage social media accounts and engage with customers. Whether it’s through multiple profiles or inquiry delegation, social media management platforms like Hootsuite are extremely valuable when organizing the social media tasks throughout a large team.

No. 3: You Have to Know What You’re Asking

From Thursday Bram of Hyper Modern Consulting

Just deciding your business needs a Facebook page or a Google+ presence and then finding someone to handle the workload isn’t enough. Before you can delegate, you have to have a good picture of what your competitors are doing and what results you can get — as well as what the work really entails. Otherwise, social media can turn into a black hole.

No. 4: Build a Social Media Strategy

From Andrew Saladino of Just Bath Vanities

Establish clear objectives and success metrics for your social media campaign. Identify the best channels and approach for your company and look for available opportunities that might be available on some of the less known social media Websites. Craft a unified concept and company message to be used throughout all communications.

No. 5: Why Your Company’s Biggest Evangelist Should Run Social Media

From Matt Wilson of Under30CEO.com

If you want to delegate social media, you need to find someone who is absolutely obsessed with your company. Bring on a person whose passion oozes out every time they speak about your product or service. This is the only way to stand out in a crowded marketplace. Make sure that person is extremely outgoing, helpful and most of all, sincere.

No. 6: Set Time Standards

From Elizabeth Saunders of Real Life E®

You can always do more with social media, so it’s important that you clearly explain how much time you would like someone to spend on different social media activities. Also, you should establish standards of average response times to new messages so that you provide a consistent customer experience.

No. 7: Master the Corporate Voice

From Doreen Bloch of Poshly Inc.

Before delegating social media marketing, choose and be able to describe your company’s voice. Is your firm fun and chatty online? News-centric and authoritative? Witty? Then, ensure your social media team members master the tone. If all your social media marketers speak consistently, your social media implementation will be more successful.

No. 8: Delegate to Core Competency

From Lauren Maillian Bias of Luxury Market Branding

Recognize the social media strengths and interests of each person in your company. Delegate specific aspects of social media content to team members that are most competent in that space and let them crush it. If your team works on their core competencies they will always be excited and passionate about the content they create. And, most importantly, that content will be authentic.

No. 9: Make Sure They Understand Your Company

From Lucas Sommer of Audimated

You should be 100% on the same page with whomever you are delegating social media to. Social media is the public relations of the Internet community and whoever is responsible for managing your social media should have a firm understanding of the goals you have for social media and how you are going to portray your business.

No. 10: No Weak Links

From Arjun Arora of ReTargeter

Every member of your company has a public voice, so it’s important to make sure that your entire team is involved with your brand socially. This means they should be sharing the great things that you do with their network. But everyone must be in line with your brand’s mission. Make sure that your company defines its core value proposition, and make it a point for every employee to adhere to it.
